Basel, June 17, 2025 - easyJet Switzerland celebrates 20 years at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg today. For two decades, the company has been democratising air travel, expanding connectivity and promoting the attractiveness and economic growth of the greater Basel region. Located in the heart of a trinational catchment area, easyJet actively contributes to the dynamic development of the entire region.

What began in 2004 with the first three destinations - London, Liverpool and Berlin - reached an altogether new dimension on June 17, 2025: with the base’s official inauguration, nine further flight connections were introduced to the destinations of the cities of Alicante, Barcelona, Hamburg, Madrid, Malaga, Naples, Nice, Palma de Mallorca and Rome. In its first year of operation, easyJet carried over 900 000 passengers, a figure that rose to almost five million in 2024. With a market share of 55%, easyJet is now the leading airline in Basel.

easyJet provides a total of 77 destinations, with 84% of these connections offered exclusively by easyJet. This includes a recently announced connection to Vienna for the upcoming winter season.* Seit 2024, easyJet expanded its services in Switzerland with the introduction of easyJet holidays, providing package tour offers. From Basel-Mulhouse, customers can book beach or city trips at very attractive prices. There are over 5 000 hotels to choose from, including a wide selection of 4- and 5-star establishments. All package tours comprise the flight, the hotel, 23 kg of checked luggage as well transportation for all beach vacations. Furthermore, customers benefit from easyJet holidays’ Ultimate Flexibility concept, which offers the freedom to change their booking, as well as a money-back guarantee and best price guarantee.

Strongly rooted in the region and a major employer

With 12 Airbus aircraft, easyJet Switzerland is based in the heart of the Trinational Region and employs close to 500 employees by means of local working contracts, most of which are permanent. The long-standing commitment of many employees—some of whom have been with the company since it opened in 2005—and an average length of service of ten years among crew members are testament to their strong loyalty to the company.

Jean-Marc Thévenaz, easyJet Switzerland’s Executive Director, said:

“Celebrating 20 years in Basel means above all to celebrate a shared adventure. Thanks to our passengers’ trust and the outstanding commitment of our teams, some of which have been with us right from the beginning, we have grown with the region.

Our base here has always been particularly important to us: with easyJet, we initiated a revival of air traffic in a region that was poorly served in terms of flight connections, while also contributing to the democratisation of air traffic. We are determined to continue connecting people with each other, supporting the local economy and offering simple, affordable and yet high-quality travel offers.”

Since its foundation, easyJet Switzerland collaborates closely with EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg as well as with operational partners such as Swissport, supporting the airline since 2004. These partnerships are crucial to ensuring that passengers receive excellent service and an exceptional travel experience.

Tobias Markert, Managing Director of EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, pointed out:

“easyJet Switzerland has been a major partner for EuroAirport for 20 years. This partnership was part of the development of our binational airport platform which is serving a unique trinational region in Europe. The presence of easyJet has contributed significantly to making EuroAirport an attractive and easily accessible airport for passengers and business operators alike.”

Andreas Keller, Swissport Senior Vice President and Managing Director Switzerland & France, added:

“easyJet is one of our most loyal partners at EuroAirport, where we have been providing ground handling services since 2004. This long-standing cooperation is based on trust, operational efficiency and a joint, unwavering dedication to safety and service quality. We are very proud to support easyJet with its development in Basel and to contribute together to the performance of Switzerland’s aviation sector.”

A strategic dedication to a more sustainable future

Due to its efficient operating model based on a state-of-the-art fleet of aircraft and more environmentally friendly flight techniques, easyJet has always been a pioneer in terms of sustainability. In 2022, the company unveiled its Net Zero Roadmap, which sets out a clear path for reducing its carbon footprint to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

To achieve this goal, easyJet pursues a holistic approach, including continuous modernisation of its fleet, operational optimisations, the gradual introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and the development of ground-breaking technologies in cooperation with key aviation players such as Airbus and Rolls-Royce.

EasyJet is already implementing these commitments at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg: 25% of the aircraft used are latest-generation Airbus A320neo, which significantly reduce emissions and noise pollution, thereby contributing to a more sustainable aviation. easyJet has the most modern and quietest fleet at its two Swiss bases located in Basel and Geneva. Furthermore, the company complies with European directives and uses Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) across its entire route network.

Agreement between easyJet and EuroAirport for more sustainable operations at Basel-Mulhouse Airport

EuroAirport and easyJet signed a Letter of Intent in order to achieve more sustainable flight operations at Basel-Mulhouse Airport. The cooperation’s aim is to assess and develop various measures and actions to be taken. This includes using Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), experimenting with nitrogen infrastructures, waste management optimisation as well as noise reduction measures. The agreement between easyJet and EuroAirport is in line with the Airport’s overall approach to sustainable development. This collaboration completes the actions already taken by the Airport to reduce aircraft noise and CO2 emissions. Concerning the CO2 emissions for which it is directly responsible, the Airport intends to reach “net zero emissions” by 2030.
