"Memories of the Future"

Art at the Airport – a project to raise awareness for sustainable travel

EuroAirport realised the art project “Memories of the Future” in collaboration with Swiss climate protection association myclimate and two schools of art from the region, the “Hochschule Macromedia” in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) and the Basel-based “Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst FHNW” (Switzerland). Via the display of artworks on building surfaces, free wall space at EuroAirport is used as a canvas and projection surface by a young generation of creative people who are trying to invent a more sustainable world. Under the motto “Memories of the Future”, the students created a world filled with creative memories about vacations, distant cultures and natural wonders. The large-scale paintings and installations are placed in different locations in the departure and arrival zones, aiming to initiate both the wider public and passengers alike to raise their sense of responsibility for their own carbon footprint, and to encourage them to offset their flights.

Florere
The word “Florere” is derived from a Latin word, which means “bloom”. This project represents biodiversity and celebrates nature in all its forms, colours and textures. The idea behind “bloom” is to give life to the airport, and to suggest the idea of growth, forward thinking, and being in nature.

Rising Seas
Global mean sea level is strongly impacted by climate change. These columns represent the estimated elevation of six European seas under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 scenario from 01/12/2009 to 30/11/2099. (The 2009 sea levels are not proportional to each other.)

Michael Rubaba
Ethereal Memories
This is “Ethereal Memories”. It explores how we, as global citizens, control and are conscious of our carbon footprint. We are impactful actors on the earth’s beautiful landscapes and should care more. With your flight compensation, you are securing a greener, more beautiful future.

Thanks for last time
In Iceland, people use the expression “Takk fyrir síðast!” to say thank you for a wonderful shared experience. It means “Thanks for last time.” These visualised personal memories from Iceland are a thank you to nature. By offsetting your flights, you are protecting your world and are saying “Takk fyrir síðast!”.

View from above
The climate determines our life on earth. The work “Blick von oben” (View from above) looks at the earth's climate through a scientific lens. It is a compilation of current European weather maps. By offsetting flights, it will be possible to preserve the climate in its current state for future generations.

Colours of a sunset
This abstract work reflects the warm mood and atmosphere during a sunset. The resulting moments with friends and family should be preserved for future generations. By offsetting the carbon footprint of your flights, you can support us in our goal of preserving them for a long time to come.

Join the journey
The illustration is intended to symbolise diversity and draw attention to commonalities. These can be applied not only to the animal world, but also to humans. It aims to motivate people to do something for our planet by offsetting their flights and join the journey of nature conservation.

Natural beauties
This work considers the topic of nature in all its splendour; its diversity in colour, shape and size, and its uniqueness. Attention is drawn to the environment and its protection in a playful way. Through your contribution towards climate protection, natural beauties will be preserved for future generations. What can you discover?

Colugo (Giant flying lemur)
Habitat: South-East Asia. Colugos are nocturnal and spend most of their time in trees. Food: flowers, leaves, buds and fruits. With my poster series, I would like to draw attention to animals that many people are unfamiliar with and show the wonderful diversity of nature, which makes it worthwhile to make a climate protection contribution.

Blue sea dragon
This diurnal snail swims on the surface of the sea in warm parts of the oceans like the east and south coasts of South Africa or the east coast of Australia. With my poster series, I would like to draw attention to animals that many people are unfamiliar with and show the wonderful diversity of nature, which makes it worthwhile to make a climate protection contribution.

Wallace's flying frog
Jumping and gliding from tree to tree, the Wallace’s flying frog from Southeast Asia is nocturnal. Food: insects and young, small mammals as well as birds. With my poster series, I would like to draw attention to animals that many people are unfamiliar with and show the wonderful diversity of nature, which makes it worthwhile to make a climate protection contribution.

Climate considerations
This experimental work is inspired by thoughts about nature and climate protection. The various elements actively address the subject. I would like to encourage the viewers to make a contribution to climate protection.

View from the window
This work communicates various thoughts on nature, environmental protection and climate change. The complexity of the issues is indicated by the various elements. The viewer’s own associations complete the overall work and should encourage them to make a contribution to climate protection.

Cloudy sky
Depending on the time of day, the sky changes colour and never looks the same. Some may even be able to make out shapes in the amazing formations we know as clouds. Far too rarely do we take the time to admire natural spectacles. Give nature the recognition it deserves with your climate protection contribution.

The first glance
The concept was “The first glance”. When we travel to somewhere new and see the beauty of the place for the first time. That “wow” feeling. I wanted to create a landscape scene where people don’t play the dominant role. With our contribution to climate protection, we are preserving that “wow” feeling for future generations.

Immerse yourself
I associate holidays and travel with one thing above all: water. Whether a crystal-clear mountain lake or the Mediterranean coast, water means peace, relaxation, refreshment and fun. Climate change is affecting the quality and quantity of the water available. Do your bit for the climate and offset your flight.

Elena Hauser
The freedom of nature
Whether in the mountains, at the beach or in the countryside in general, everyone likes to spend their holidays somewhere beautiful in order to escape from everyday life. Your contribution to the climate will help nature remain a place of refuge and continue to make unique, beautiful holidays possible for generations to come.

Future
The poster endeavours to visualise a greener future. A small section of a city that puts more emphasis on people and the environment itself. It shows environmentally friendly means of public transport and green buildings. Make a contribution to a greener future by offsetting your flights.

Simon Füldner
The magic of nature
This is the Northern Cascade Range combined with a programmed flow field effect. A return to the roots of nature. By offsetting your flights, you can contribute to the preservation of nature so that future generations will still be able  marvel at it with their own eyes.

Calm
Today more than ever, nature serves as a place of retreat that combines peace, serenity and beauty. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the wind rustles softly in the trees and the sun gently caresses the skin. Nature is pure and worth protecting and should also be preserved in the future. Make a contribution to this by offsetting your flights.

The Horizon of your Journey
Each poster depicts the amount of CO2 emitted by round-trip flights from the EuroAirport to its most frequent destinations. The colour gradients represent the beautiful view seen from a plane. Please offset the emissions of your next flight to continue to enjoy this sight!

Flying Imagination
Do we remember our first flight? Feeling excited about the new and the unknown ahead of us. Let’s bring back the excitement of flying, soaring above the clouds, feeling free. As for the moments when we cannot fly but would like to – let's let our imagination take us on a journey.
