Refurbishment of EuroAirport’s main runway
General presentation of the refurbishment projekt
In the spring of 2026, EuroAirport’s central section of main runway 15/33 as well as Taxiway Bravo were refurbished. The work was carried out to ensure long-term safety and operational readiness of central airfield areas. The main runway was completely closed during the construction phase and reopened on May 16, 2026.
The secondary runway 07/25 remained in operation during construction, allowing for limited flight operations to continue.
The construction project was part of the ongoing airport infrastructure maintenance program.
Scope of the refurbishment work
The central section of main runway 15/33 as well as Taxiway Bravo were refurbished at EuroAirport.
- Refurbishment of main runway 15/33 over a length of 1 500 meters
- Refurbishment of Taxiway Bravo over a length of 2 100 meters
- Durable concrete for high load-bearing capacity and a long service life
Context: development of the main runway
Since its construction in 1953, the main runway was modernised repeatedly: a runway extension to the North in 1978, followed by a refurbishment of the Southern section of the runway in 1991, and finally the refurbishment works within the Northern runway section in 2011. The 2026 renovation continued this long-term modernisation effort.
Schedule & construction organisation
Preparatory work started in September 2024. The main work on the main runway and on Taxiway Bravo was carried out in the spring of 2026. During this period, the main runway remained completely closed. Flight operations continued on a limited basis via secondary runway 07/25.
The construction site base was established on temporarily used agricultural land. This land will be restored to its original condition by 2027 at the latest. An archaeological survey of the planned construction area was conducted as early as the end of 2023.
Contracted construction companies
The following consortiums were commissioned to carry out the construction work:
- Main runway 15/33: Consortium WALO Bertschinger AG (Switzerland) and TRBA (Belgium/France)
- Taxiway Bravo: Consortium TRABET / KARP KNEIP (France/Luxembourg)
Noise monitoring and mitigation mesures
Construction and aircraft noise were monitored during the refurbishment period. To minimise construction noise, high-noise activities were scheduled simultaneously, light signals were used whenever possible, and mobile sound protection barriers were installed.
The monitoring stations and the measured values can still be viewed in the TraVis online tool.
