Refurbishment of EuroAirport’s main runway
Important infrastructural measure for operational safety
After decades of intense operational use, EuroAirport’s main runway 15/33 is in need of refurbishment. Construction work is scheduled for spring 2026 and, due to safety reasons, will require a complete closure of the runway from April 15 to May 20, 2026. The secondary runway 07/25 will remain in operation during this period, allowing for limited flight operations to continue.
Scope of the refurbishment work
The following works are planned as part of the project:
- Refurbishment of the main runway 15/33’s central section over a length of 1 500 meters
- Refurbishment of taxiway Bravo over a length of 2 100 meters
Context: development of the main runway
Since its initial construction in 1953, the main runway was modernised several times:
- 1978: Runway extension to the north
- 1991: Refurbishment of the southern runway section
- 2011: Refurbishment of the northern runway section
This upcoming measure is part of a long-term maintenance program to ensure operational safety.
EuroAirport’s runway system
EuroAirport has two runways:
- Main runway 15/33: Length: 3 900 meters, suitable for all aircraft types, allows for operations in all meteorological conditions, handles around 97% of all air traffic.
- Secondary runway 07/25: 1 715 meters long, suitable for smaller aircraft
Schedule & construction organisation
Preparatory work
Preparatory work (construction of the site base) began in September 2024. This mainly includes:
- Grading work and construction site development
- Road construction of temporary roadways
- The installation of an intersection with traffic lights in the area of the “CD 12bis” road
This work was carried out during the day from Monday to Friday, took a total of around six months and had no impact of ongoing flight operations.
The construction site base was established on temporarily used agricultural land, which will be returned to its original condition by 2027 at the latest.
At the end of 2023, an archaeological survey was conducted in the planned construction area - a necessary prerequisite for carrying out construction work.
Construction period for the main runway and taxiway Bravo (April-May 2026)
The actual refurbishment work for the main runway will be carried out from April 15 to May 20, 2026. During this phase, the main runway will be completely closed.
Contracted construction companies
The following consortiums were commissioned to carry out the construction work:
- Main runway 15/33: Consortium WALO Bertschinger AG (Switzerland) and TRBA (Belgium/France)
- Taxiway Bravo: Consortium TRABET / KARP KNEIP (France/Luxembourg)
Flight operations during the construction phase
The secondary runway 07/25 will remain in operation, making limited flight operations possible during this period.
As the Airport’s main runway cannot be used during the construction phase, a certain number of IFR flight movements will be handled via the secondary runway. These are flights involving larger aircraft types (A319/320), which are rarely handled via the secondary runway during normal operations. The changed use of secondary Runway 07/25 will lead to aircraft noise pollution being noticeable in areas that were previously little affected by air traffic or affected in a different way.
An overview of passenger related flight services available during the refurbishment period can be found here.
Noise pollution due to construction
Noise pollution emanating from the construction site will be monitored during the refurbishment phase. A specialised acoustics firm will develop the monitoring concept, carry out the measurements and evaluate the results. In addition, various actions are being taken to limit noise pollution:
- Concentration of the noisiest work during the daytime
- Preferential use of light signals to mark danger zones around machines instead of acoustic warning signals
- Installation of mobile sound protection barriers during particularly noisy work
Aircraft noise pollution
Altered flight operations, with a modified use of Runway 07/25, will result in aircraft noise pollution above municipalities that had previously been largely unaffected by air traffic. This will be monitored throughout the entire construction phase via three mobile noise measuring stations in the approach and departure zones of Runway 07/25.
All measuring stations and registered values can be viewed on the Airport’s online tool Travis.
