Sport plays an important role in North Western Switzerland. In addition to football, tennis has also enjoyed high popularity in Basel and the trinational region for many decades. There is a good reason for this. Swiss Indoors, which is part of the ATP500 series, brings the world’s tennis elite to Basel every year. Since its founding in 1970 this major sport and social occasion has become the most important event in Switzerland and the world’s third largest indoor tournament.
The radiance of Swiss Indoors will once again become apparent this year as international guests fly into EuroAirport between 19 and 27 October for the event. The binational airport also values its close links with the popular tennis tournament. As Matthias Suhr, Director of EuroAirport, underlines: “We are delighted to continue our existing commitment to Swiss Indoors and to extend it as of next year. Sport is an ideal way of bringing together people from different cultures and regions, which is very important to us.”
“Game, Set and Fly” Marking the signing of the three-year agreement for the sponsoring partnership, Matthias Suhr and Roger Brennwald, founder and President of Swiss Indoors, also unveiled a new showcase at EuroAirport at the end of July 2019.
Departing tennis fans from EuroAirport can admire in particular the rackets and balls of six top Swiss Indoors players on display in the showcase - Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Marin Čilić and Kei Nishikori. The showcase also brings to mind the “Game, Set and Fly” campaign that the airport is running for the third time together with Swiss Indoors during the upcoming tournament.
Matthias Suhr comments: “Each evening, the day’s winner of the singles matches plays a signed ball with his racket into the spectators’ stands. Whoever catches it, wins a flight for two people from EuroAirport to one of our European destinations.”
Roger Brennwald is very pleased: “Extending our partnership with EuroAirport gives the tournament wings. EuroAirport and Swiss Indoors are a strong double act. Both are firmly rooted in the region and serve as a bridge to the rest of the world.”
During the Swiss Indoors tournament, EuroAirport will again have a stand at St. Jakobshalle where the winners can redeem their flights. A prize draw for a EuroAirport Advantages Card (https://advantages.euroairport.com/en/) will also be held daily.
