New airline based at EuroAirport: charter flights to the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands with SmartLynx

The range of charter flights out of EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is growing: on 5 June 2021, SmartLynx Airlines officially opened a new base at Basel-Mulhouse Airport for TUI, Germany.

On 5 June 2021, at 6.10 am with flight 6Y616 to Rhodes, SmartLynx Airlines launched its opening season at its new base at EuroAirport. Operating charter flights for TUI, Germany, SmartLynx Airlines serves tourist destinations around the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. Passengers can now book their flights directly on the TUI website, or through a travel agent; additional services can be reserved on the SmartLynx website.

SmartLynx has decided to base one aircraft, an Airbus A320, at EuroAirport. The Airline is creating up to twenty direct new jobs for the crews who will live in the tri-national region, as well as numerous indirect jobs in catering, maintenance, and aircraft handling on airport facilities and for the Airport itself.

SmartLynx thus confirms its arrival on the Swiss and German tourism market. SmartLynx is a Baltic airline based in Riga with a fleet of 21 airplanes of the airbus family; in 2019 it carried already 3.6 million passengers. SmartLynx is one of the leading providers on the tourist charter and ACMI market (chartering aircraft with crews, maintenance, and insurance); with this new base, it is realising its ambition of expanding into Switzerland and Germany. According to Olivier Pawel, Director of SmartLynx Germany, the key to success in times of crisis lies in the compliance with “the highest IOSA and EASA quality standards by signing up to the EASA COVID-Charter. We intend to distinguish ourselves in terms of our passenger experience for the sunny destinations through quick and practical online check-in, quality of service and comfort on board.”

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg: one hundred direct destinations

Serving one hundred odd destinations, EuroAirport is a gateway – via direct flight – to the main European and Mediterranean cities. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, a bi-national airport serving the connectivity needs of a tri-national region, is an essential player in the regional economy, providing over 6000 jobs on its facilities. Sustainable development is anchored in its mission and guides the course of its three fields of activity: passenger traffic, freight, and industrial. Quality customer service is at the core of Basel-Mulhouse Airport’s operations, represented in practice by its Business Centre, certified cargo terminal for the pharmaceutical industry, and the services and infrastructure made available notably for one of the world’s leading centres for the fitting-out of very high-end aircraft.
